There are RSEs who specialise in Earth Science, e.g. https://socrse.github.io/geoscience-sig/

This is what i immediately thought of too. Some more links;

Research Software Engineers - https://researchsoftware.org/

Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research_software_engineering (checkout References/Further Reading etc.)

Reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/ResearchSoftwareEng/

PS: LinkedIn shows me a bunch of jobs with this designation (though many seem to be AI/ML related).

There is also a more user friendly version of the MetaWards at https://metawards.org/ ( GH repo: https://github.com/chryswoods/MetaWards ) implemented in Python which identically matches the results of the C implementation, verified by tests.

The good news is people are trying to address this. Starting in the UK there is a movement for Research Software Engineering https://rse.ac.uk/ and happening right now is the German RSE conference https://www.de-rse.org/en/conf2019/
