Should be optional not enforced as the only option.

Sorry to be clear. When you are arbitrarily ask to verify your account not with email verification or robots stuff or a myriad other options; when they reach for age verification as the first thing; and giving up ur gov ID is the only way forward desk okey this never being the best approach to fraud prevention going right back, then yeah this is selling out.

I've long been a big fan of Porkbun, switching over to them from namecheap who I supported from back in the SOPA era. But today Im very frustrated. A friend of mine was required to go through Age ID. This is in Australia and is despite there being no legal requirement to ask for Age ID on domains in Oz.

Yes Age verification for social media was recently enacted into law; but I think we should expect that good companies don't self opt into additional systems of surviellance until such time as they are legally compelled and at the very least have exhausted other options.

It stings harder as I had porkbun pegged as one of the companies standing up for users and pushing back against a surviellance web. Angry and frustrated.

This is troubling because I also left namecheap for porkbun some years ago. While porkbun is good I am willing to move my 50+ domains to a worthy alternative when the time comes, however for now I’m going to wait and see how this story unfolds.

Also what are some good alternatives to porkbun?

A key critique

The article is well argued and well written, as far as I’m concerned.

What’s needed if you really want adoption is to define a term; something like 256-ex for extended. Or whatever. But folks and apps need to be able to say; we’ve implemented or we support 256-ex. Without this label is hard to drive adoption.

The heartbleed thing from a few years back best taught me this.

Good luck I hope to see broad adoption it’s a great idea.

Give it a name, better yet move the copy onto a website with the same name also and a little icon folks can add to their website if they implement this k to their terminal app.

I don’t have the source (I’ll have to try find it), but I read that the cell site simulators can work on 4G and earlier but don’t work on 5G. So one thing folks can do is set ur phone to use 5G networks only (unless ur stuck and then u can make it looser but be aware your less protected at that time).

I do this on iOS I’m sure it’s do-able on GrapheneOS and hopefully on Android too.

5G CSS is harder yes, but keep in mind that most 5G is the 5G_NSA variety, and is really just riding on the same cell bands, no mmwave here. You probably notice that your phone often slips out of 5g, or you inhabit different modes here.

Essentially, 5G is sort of a lie. Phones spend a lot of time exchanging information via 4g/lte, and just like 2g/3g and 3g/4g, there are simply downgrades that can be performed in the field, without getting too far into the weeds.

5G matters not for this.

Fully agree. The AI companies have broken the basic pacts of public open data. Their ignoring of robots.txt files is but one example of their lack of regard. With the open commons being quickly pillaged we’ll end up in a “community member access only model”. A shift from grab any books here you like just get them back in a month; to you’ll need to register as a library member before you can borrow. I see that’s where we’ll end up. Public blogs and websites will suffer and respond first is my prediction.

I think matrix / element are already working and very usable BUT what is needed is that big push to add the polish. I agree with others here, the matrix project would do well to realise that it’s a great contender for being a discord replacement and set about bulking up with some of the most loved features on discord.

A polished ui and a couple of fav discord features onto the product milestone plan and I think matrix adoption would start to really pick up.

Some interesting things are cooking on the Matrix front. The "Matrix state of the union" talk at FOSDEM is a compact recap: https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/event/URX89L-matrix-state-o...

I recommend this excellent podcast (episode) that is dedicated to going over his life and impact. Incredible person and story!

There was also a Strong Songs episode about Fela Kuti back in November 2025:

It's very good, but in the end I was disappointed with how uncritical it was.

I bought the vinyl reissue of The Best of the Black President.

I think it was a mistake that Fela's cousin's criticisms were only briefly mentioned.

As well as leaving Seun Keuti unchecked after screaming "bitch, get me a pen!".

I also found it funny that they used Barack Obama's name in the marketing release but you only ever hear about ~30 seconds from him!

Wasn’t their translations project “pre AI”? That’s not running an LLM is it?

It's not an LLM but it is a tiny pre-trained ML model running inside the browser. Funded by the EU and made in partnership with a few European universities as well: https://mozilla.github.io/translations/docs/

Their level of acceptance for releasing a new model (AKA new language support) is to benchmark within 5% difference of Google Translate, basically proving you don't need an external party to do good-enough translations for you. It's like the coolest thing they worked on recently.

Most modern translation tools are language models and this was true even before the LLM chatbot explosion. The difference is they were trained on smaller (and less dubiously sourced) datasets and the output that was trained for was translations directly rather than conversations.

My city is car dependent and often no effort goes into making it more walkable.

Would love a version that renders a mix of cars and trucks onto any roads, to show up how crap the experience would actually be out front of road facing building.
