For those that didn’t take the time to read, this is about unikernels

Laissez fair capitalism never works.

I don’t understand this mindset. Looking at numbers in a vacuum.

The labor market is literal wage slavery, with slaves being rented instead of owned.

This attitude of everyone for themselves is literally what’s wrong with this modern, disgusting “individualist” pull yourself up by the bootstraps society.

I know the rules here are to be civil, but I really don’t understand this “f you I got mine” mentality.

> The labor market is literal wage slavery, with slaves being rented instead of owned.

And yet it's the best system we've devised so far. Maybe we should go back to the older systems where the only way to climb the social ladder was to go to war pillaging our neighbors and taking them as slaves

> And yet it's the best system we've devised so far

This is the truth, and it's the saddest part of all...

It sounds like you're only seeing the extreme examples of the divide between individualism and communalism.

There are much more reasonable arguments made for individualism than "f you I got mine", just like there are more reasonable arguments for communalism than the ones posed by Stalin.

I just want to thank you for sharing your politics views. These are the same ideas and views, as an American, that I’m struggling with. It helps so much to know other people in other parts of the world are going through the same thing and have the same thoughts and ideas.

OP never mentioned conflict. He just said he zones out and ignores his wife.

Just a thought, but could they be worried about privacy features of the iPhone? Whistle blowers, dissidents, etc., would benefit from iOS Security relative to Android. Then again, I don’t know the export laws of China, for all I know, they require weak security to sell the iPhone in China.

Obligatory plug for the book “Bullshit Jobs.” But, what you’ve said is the mail on the head.

What blows my mind is how much engineering effort we collectively put into consumerism and business process, without taking a step back to the design phase and asking ourselves if we need a new architecture.

There’s should also be a tribble in there, somewhere.

This post from today says that Llama 2 7b performs at the level of gpt-4, but 30x cheaper.

I think you're missing the point of the comment you're replying to, and of the story as a whole.

Yes, human beings have agency and are ultimately responsible and accountable for their decisions.

Human beings, like all living organisms, are complex systems. Social media, marketers and advertisers, among others, regularly manipulate and abuse such systems.

So, yes, while it is true that addiction is a spectrum, that spectrum applies to social media as much as it does with other addictions like sugar or amphetamines.

What your argument does is absolve those attempting to abuse such organic, complex systems for their own gain, regardless of the harm it promotes or directly causes.

EDIT:

- Further, in case you're missing the peer reviewed, scientific studies of social media and addiction: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=scholarly+articles+soci...

How about both groups suffer far more than they should in any civilized, modern society. It’s not a contest which group is screwed over the most, let’s instead focus on why/how/what and solve.
