No need to apologize. This is 1.0., if any community can understand, it's this one :)
Interestingly enough, I was up late last night looking for a simple and collaborative task/project management solution - and here you are. Excited to try it out.
I like a lot of it, but at the same time, much of it feels it's been taken (not improved upon) from the 37Signals book of design. From the sign up, to the various pricing options, the way the pricing options is arranged, through to the buttons across the site.
The video also feeds a bit "meh" i'm afraid. "Meaningful Discussion" in groups is beginning to sound very cliched.
yes, a lot of this is inspired by what 37signals does, mainly because "it works" and why re-invent the wheel, especially since I'm not looking to innovate on this area.
thanks for the feedback on the video, if you have any ideas on how I can make it better, that'd be great
You don't rate ReadWriteWeb or The Next Web? Read somewhere that RWW drove more traffic to a startup's website than TC. TNW has grown a ton over the last year.
Anyway, i suggest email them all and see who bites first.
That's bad form if you're negotiating to get an exclusive. You're also less likely to get anyone to cover you if your pitch is general rather than directed at a particular writer or editor.
Let me preface this with the fact that I don't think the author had any bad intentions here.
That said, the article exposes a latent mentality of "there are white people and then there's this big group of 'diverse' non-white people who are all pretty much the same."
So let me get it straight: the author is offended by the idea of having community sites that appeal to different cultures and thinks the solution is ... having "a diversity website saying they support all different kinds of cultures, races, charities and organizations" instead?? Give me a break.
IMHO "celebrating diversity" isn't pretending that there are no differences and putting all minorities under one big umbrella; it's knowing that we're all different, having no problem with it, and enjoying the variety.
If you're curious, for our marketing site, we took inspiration from a couple of different sites, including 37signals, chartbeat.com, goodbarry.com, freshbooks.com and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head. I bet a lot of the aforementioned sites took some inspiration from 37signals as well :).
It looks very similar to the Basecamp and Campfire designs (ex: http://campfirenow.com/). However, both of those designs are fantastic, and I don't see too much of a problem with using them as design inspiration for a non-competitive company.
